Emmi 24-016
Adoption Update
Emmi was adopted by a wonderful couple who drove hours to meet her with their resident Golden. She and their male dog interacted well and Emmi followed him around. She loved the attention they showed her and was excited that there were extra hands to pet her. She will be a very happy dog because her new Dad is retired and will be home with her. Then more attention when Mom comes home from work. She will have only one other dog to compete with for their attention.
I’m so happy for you, Emmi. We will miss you, but I know you will have a wonderful life! I can’t wait for pictures and updates!
Update:
Emmi has made a lot of progress as I have gotten to know her and figure her out. It took a long time to understand how to make her feel secure and get her to try new things. It took being consistent and yummy treats!
Emmi loves to go for car rides and follows my dogs into the car. She likes to ride on the floor in the back seat. The problem was when we got home, she wouldn’t get out of the car! She felt secure in there on the blanket so I had to help her out with the leash and a lot of high value treats. My dogs always run directly into the back yard when we get home, so I think that is why Emmi never wanted to get out of the car. If I let her go directly into the house, she will get out of the car with my dogs. One mystery solved!
Emmi had her spay surgery and is completely healed. We are looking for her forever home now and have a list of requirements that she will need to keep her safe. She will need:
•A fenced in yard unless the adopters have a plan to keep her safe. She loves to chase squirrels out of the yard and might continue going without a fence. If she got scared, she would be a flight risk and run away.
•Another dog could help her learn how to be a “normal” dog and help her feel secure, but she really doesn’t interact with my dogs. I think she could go to a home as an only dog as long as her adopters work with her on training. Perhaps it is because my dogs are older former breeder dogs who don’t play.
•A home with or without cats. She met my son’s cat and looked at it and walked away. The cat checked her out and she didn’t care
•A home with or without children. She loves any human who will pet her, but the children should be 8 or over because of her fear of quick movements and loud noises (screaming kids would scare her). She met young children with her tail wagging, but kept close as they petted her.
•A home with patient people who will help Emmi be the best she can be. It will probably take her longer than an average dog to gain trust and learn to do things on her own.
If you would like to meet Emmi or learn more about her, please fill out an application to adopt. She is one special dog who deserves her own familye.
Original Bio:
Emmi was surrendered to GRRoIOWA by a loving person who realized that Emmi was going to be too much for her because of Emmi’s background. The surrendering owner only had her for 2 weeks and couldn’t get her to do anything. She got Emmi from a breeder on Craig’s List, but had no idea what a former commercial breeder dog was like. She wanted a dog that wasn’t so skittish and more outgoing than Emmi is.
Emmi will be 6 years old on August 19, 2024. The typical breeder usually sells the mommas after 5 years of breeding. Emmi had just weaned a litter of puppies before she left the breeder. We think that she spent a lot of time in an outdoor kennel before the breeder sold her because Emmi isn’t a fan of being outside. One thing to note is Emmi has a 10-inch scar from one shoulder to the other. The vet thinks it is from a restraining collar used during breeding.
Many former breeder dogs will follow another dog so they aren’t alone and can learn from them, but Emmi needed to be leashed and led outside to go potty until she learned the routine. She always wanted to be by her people instead of following another dog. She doesn’t want to go outside if it is raining or going to rain and trembles if it is thundering. I found that a ThunderShirt helps calm her somewhat. The surrendering owner said she is afraid of a flag flapping in the wind and I think just being out on a windy day scares her.
Emmi is very unsure of new things, so she needs slow introductions. When I mow the grass, I have to kennel her because she barked non-stop if she watched me, which upset her and my older dog. Then she would pee on a dog blanket. Otherwise, she never barks and only had a few accidents in the house because she didn’t know how to tell me she had to go out. When new people come over, she would stay back and observe them. After a month, she felt brave enough to go check them out on her own.
Emmi is a very sweet dog and loves to get attention from people and be petted. She watches my dogs, but doesn’t play with them. She looks
forward to eating her meals or getting a treat. I was very surprised when she took a treat from my hand because many breeder dogs won’t make eye contact or trust a person. She doesn’t know what toys are for yet. The surrendering owner said she liked to bring shoes to her bed in the crate. She never did that here because I don’t have extra shoes outside of the closet. She has never counter surfed here, but again, I don’t leave food on the counters or table.
Emmi is a low – medium energy dog. Since she isn’t sure of the outside, she is always within 10 feet of me when we are out instead of running around exploring. The funny thing about her is after she has eaten her evening meal, she goes to a safe spot and goes to sleep. I always had to wake her up to go outside before I went to bed, but sometimes she wouldn’t go potty. Eventually, I found out that she can go for 12 hours without going potty, so some nights I just let her sleep and woke her up in the morning to go out and then eat. She never moved all night.
Emmi had her wellness exam and started on preventatives. We scheduled her spay surgery, so after that is healed and she has become braver, she will be ready to find her forever home.
Emmi will need a home where people are patient with her while she comes out of her shell. It might take a while for her to feel comfortable to do things on her own and learn the routine. Former breeder dogs like schedules so they know what to expect. If you think Emmi might be a good addition to your family, please submit an application from the website.
