Dug is a 90 pound, 3.5 year-old English Creme. He could stand to lose some weight, and most likely will with more activity in his foster home and forever home. He is a very sweet dog that is used to living with other dogs and a Maine Coon cat. The surrendering family went through some very tough times, and decided rehoming to GRRoIowa was the best decision for Dug’s well-being.
Kids – He has not been around children in the past, so we are suggesting children be 8 and over if they are going to be around the home regularly. He truly loves everyone that gives him attention! He just needs a calmer environment.
Cats – His foster home doesn’t have one, but he did live with a Maine Coon cat, and he has shown no interest in prey on his walks.
Dogs – A companion dog would be required unless the adopter has a guaranteed work-from-home situation or is retired. Dug suffers from some separation anxiety if he is not near his dog buddy or his human.
Fence/yard – required. Due to his skiddish nature, there is a concern that if something were to scare him, he would bolt. 4′ chain link would be fine since he is not a jumper/escape artist.
Energy – Medium/situation-specific. He does get jazzed up when his foster mom gets home from work, but once the excitement is over, he just lays around and wants love. He does get excited about walks, and he plays fetch well!
Walks – loves them and walks very well on a leash. He will require consistent walks in order to shed some unhealthy weight.
Grooming – loves to be brushed! Has been to the groomer once and did great with everything besides the scary, loud blow dryer!
Cuddling – the more, the better. Adopters should be willing to spend a lot of time cuddling:) He loves to lay with his foster mom on the couch and in bed at night. Got to get those pre-sleep scratchies!
Training – Dug is potty-trained and goes approximately 8 hours holding it while his foster mom is at work. He knows the commands, “Sit” and potentially “Down”, but has to be motivated with treats. He does recall by name pretty well. No kennel training upon arrival. Any further training or advice gathering would be up to the adopter.
In’s and Out’s – Dug does not like loud environments. Can be spooked easy and get uncomfortable in the dark. He can be an attention hog and sometimes whines when he wants to see people badly. He does not like when dogs come around him when he has a chew/bone/high value toy. He has not stolen items from others, but he will hide his precious items. (It’s best policy to feed dogs separately as they acclimate and establish healthy boundaries) He is not a frequent player with other dogs, but he will play wrestle on occasion once he’s comfortable! Dug does not like being separated in other rooms or kenneled where he cannot see his people. Lastly, he can be a picky eater and not eat at regular times. He is the biggest lover, though, and would bring immense joy to his future family!
